The fact that a USA-based watch company is investing time and money into developing and manufacturing their own watch cases should be enough to excite any serious watch geek. While in recent years most watch enthusiasts have been fixated on movements, it’s important to remember that just because a watch has an “in-house” heartbeat from Switzerland, doesn’t mean its body isn’t from *gasp* China!
Such is also the case (no pun intended) for many so-called American watches that are assembled in the states. Not anymore – at least where Kobold is concerned.
It’s wonderful that KWC is making moves to manufacture cases in USA, but this action is making us desire older Kobolds more than ever. If the company keeps on track, there will never be another Fricker-German-made Kobold case. That means now is the time to scoop up as many pre-owned pieces as you can.
The Kobold Soarway Diver is a good place to start. It’s a tool watch but doesn’t feel bulky like many others in the same category. It’s a versatile timepiece with many options available.
This classic can be found in steel or titanium. Dials in black, blue, or ivory (as shown here). With a 5 link bracelet or without. In a regular metal finish or DLC coated. Solid caseback or exhibition style… you get the point. [full specs]
41.3mm is a comfortable overall size for and thanks to the ultra slim 10.25mm case, the original Soarway Diver slides smoothly under the cuff of a dress shirt Monday-Friday. The weekend arrives and you’re feeling an adventure brewing, swap the bracelet for a 20mm nylon NATO style strap – totally different watch.

It’s 2016 and you’re all about microbrand niche watch companies based in the United States. Uh, guys, that’s Kobold. Online, crowdfunded pre-order deals, small production runs, customization… that smells like Kobold Watch Company. So, new watch collectors, meet the classic version of what you’re obsessed with today.
Update:
Another reason to consider classic Kobolds with the old case style is because they have notches on the caseback for easy access into the movement.
The company changed over to a flat screwdown caseback (no notch design) that is very challenging for even the most experienced watchmakers to get into. Sure, you can try a friction ball or a Bergeon 5700 style bench caseback opener with a suction die attachment… but good luck! The flat casebacks were apparently created to prevent access to the movement, therefore requiring watches to have to be sent back to the manufacturer for service.

does anyone know where I can get a Black OEM Black Rubber Kobold band for the Artic Diver Tactical watch? It was a Rubber B type band that fit flush with the case. It came with the watch but I have had a problem sourcing one or something that fits that well with this watch.
Patrick, I have a black one and a lime green one for my arctic diver. Both are in great shape. I love them, but I mostly keep mine on the Kobold canvas strap. My wrist is a little bit too small for his rubber straps. I wish I had a bigger wrist because I would keep it on his rubber straps. They are such good quality! Let me know if you’d like to discuss this… Read more »
